In the late 1980s, a few years after it became obvious to my fellow psychologists that I had no intention of playing by their rules, the North Carolina Psychology Board brought me up on charges of misleading the public and interfering in the so-called “treatment” another psychologist was giving a 5-year-old child. Within minutes of seating ourselves in the hearing room, it became evident to my attorney and me that the members of the Board had already made up their minds. They were not there to have a reasonable discussion of the issues; they intended to strip me of my license.
